Chief's Message

Dear Residents,

On behalf of the men and women of the Garrettsville Freedom Nelson Joint Fire District, I would like to take a moment to thank you — our community — for your continued support, trust, and partnership.

Our district proudly serves the Village of Garrettsville and the Townships of Freedom and Nelson, covering over 52 square miles and protecting a population of approximately 8,800 residents. Whether responding to fires, motor vehicle accidents, technical rescues, or public safety concerns, our commitment to you remains unwavering: to provide professional, compassionate, and efficient service every day.

We operate as a part-time staffed department with a full-time Fire Chief to ensure we maintain a strong presence and rapid response to emergencies. Outside of staffed hours, our highly trained and dedicated paid-on-call firefighters respond to calls at a moment’s notice — often leaving family dinners, work, and sleep behind to serve our neighbors in their time of need. It is a great honor and responsibility that every member of our department takes very seriously.

Our work would not be possible without the steadfast support of the communities we serve. Your encouragement allows us to maintain modern equipment, pursue vital training opportunities, and continue growing a department that meets the evolving needs of public safety. We are grateful for every levy passed, every fundraiser attended, and every kind word shared.

As we move forward, we remain committed not only to emergency response but also to proactive community risk reduction efforts. We offer safety inspections, fire prevention education, public event participation, and are always willing to meet with residents to discuss how we can better serve you. Fire safety starts long before an emergency occurs, and together, we can make our community even safer for all.​
